Cornell University, Operations Research and Information Engineering
Position Description
The School of Operations Research and Information Engineering at Cornell University invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track faculty position at Cornell Tech, a research and graduate education campus of Cornell University located on Roosevelt Island in New York City. We welcome exceptional applicants in all research areas and at all levels of seniority. We are particularly interested in candidates with a broad interest in data-driven decisions, especially optimization and machine learning, both in theory and practice, and including AI-based applications. In keeping with the mission of Cornell Tech, applicants must also have a strong interest in activities that reach beyond academia for external engagement and impact, in areas that may include technology commercialization and entrepreneurship, or activities with non-profit organizations, government and policy issues, international programs, or pre-college (K-12) education. Applicants for senior positions should have a demonstrated track record of such external engagement. Cornell ORIE is a diverse group of high-quality researchers and educators interested in probability, optimization, statistics, machine learning, simulation, game theory, and a wide array of applications such as health care, e-commerce, supply chains, scheduling, manufacturing, transportation systems, financial engineering, service systems and network science. We value mathematical and technical depth and innovation, and experience with applications and practice. Ideal candidates will have correspondingly broad training and interests. Cornell Tech's academic environment encourages tight integration across disciplines in technology, business, law, and design, couples fundamental research with practice, and supports societal and commercial ventures alongside research and education. In addition to world-class academic research, a distinguishing characteristic of our work is that it engages deeply with external communities, organizations, and industry to address real-world problems and contexts that amplify the direct societal and commercial impact of our research. Hubs in Health Tech, Urban Tech, and Public Interest Tech exemplify this approach, bringing together researchers, practitioners and communities to collaborate. Applications for the position should be submitted at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/28769. We will begin reviewing candidates immediately. Applications completed by November 1, 2024 will receive full consideration, though we highly encourage early application. For applicants who will attend the INFORMS Annual Meeting, we highly encourage uploading a CV and any other application materials available to the link above by October 7, even if all application materials are not yet available. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. A complete application should include a cover letter, CV, and three brief statements (1-2 pages per statement): (1) a research statement, (2) a teaching statement, and (3) a statement of contributions to diversity. Within a clearly identified subsection of the research statement, the candidate should address prior accomplishments and future plans related to the commercial and/or broader public engagement and societal impact dimensions of their research. Candidates are encouraged to review Cornell University’s guidance for writing diversity statements as well as their evaluation considerations. We ask applicants for all faculty positions to share their experiences and/or approaches (past, current, or future) to fostering learning, research service, and/or outreach in a diverse community. Applicants may choose to submit a stand-alone statement or embed the information in other parts of their application materials. In addition to these statements, candidates should include a copy of their most significant research publications, a list of the full contact information for three references, and, for junior applicants, a doctoral transcript. Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. Diversity and Inclusion are a part of Cornell University’s heritage. We are a recognized employer and educator valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans and Individuals with Disabilities. We also recognize a lawful preference in employment practices for Native Americans living on or near Indian reservations. Cornell University is an innovative Ivy League university and a great place to work.
